The Consciousness of Seva
What is the mood behind true Seva?
The motivation behind Seva is what distinguishes it from ordinary work or charity. True Seva is performed with:
- Humility: Recognizing that we are eternal servants of the Lord and His devotees.
- Love: A genuine desire to please the Lord, not just to fulfill a duty.
- Detachment: Performing the service to the best of our ability without being attached to the outcome.
When we act with this consciousness, any activity—whether it's cooking, cleaning, singing, or managing a project—becomes a beautiful and purifying spiritual practice.
Seva as Practical Bhakti-yoga
How does Seva help in spiritual life?
"Whatever you do, whatever you eat, whatever you offer or give away, and whatever austerities you perform—do that, O son of Kuntī, as an offering to Me."
Engaging in Seva is one of the most powerful ways to make spiritual advancement. By serving the Lord and His devotees, we attract divine grace. This service purifies our hearts of selfish desires and allows our dormant love for God to awaken.
In our Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition, service to the spiritual master (Guru-seva) and service to the devotees (Vaishnava-seva) are considered especially potent forms of Seva that accelerate one's spiritual progress.
